You're right, I didn't, and to my credit it's because I couldn't actually see the check box that I was supposed to tick this is not embaressing to admit at all. You probably didn't have them checked off in the first place. I'm not even that bothered about them really, but now it's just the principle of the damn thing! You click the workshop button blue hammer and go to the checkbox on the right and click with the left mouse button I'm beginning to understand your problem, I think. Dumb questions still incoming: How do I check them off on the mods list? I click the blue hammer, the list of skins comes up and says I can pick the priority order, but there is nothing else to click or anything this list also resets itself as soon as I close it. Second, as was pointed out, you'll more than likely have to click on the bottom left of the character menu to cycle through and find the skin you're looking for. Just cause they look all lit up and shiny doesn't mean anything in-and-of itself. Make sure they're checked off in the mods list. Thanks guys, I thoght I had tried that but I'll give it another whirl maybe the mods are just not working.

If it doesn't work the mod might be broken. You have to change their skins in the character screen. I've cliked the blue button and they seem active they are lite upbut nothing is different in game.
